Effective 26 October 20265 sections

This page lists what gets stored on your device when you use this website, what each thing does, and how to change your mind.

It also covers, separately at the end, what our live chat widget stores when it appears on someone else's shop — because those shop owners need to be able to describe it in their own cookie notice.

The three categories

When you first arrive you are asked to choose, by category. Nothing outside the necessary category loads until you answer. Tags are not loaded and then switched off — they are not loaded at all.

You can reopen the choice at any time from the link in our footer, and withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it.

Necessary — always on

Needed for the site to work. There is no choice here, because without them there is no site.

What Purpose How long
cc_cookie Remembers the choice you made on this page, so you are not asked again 6 months
Session and security cookies Keep a page working and protect against abuse Session

Tells us which pages people read and where they get stuck. We use it to decide what to write and what to fix.

Provider Cookies How long
Google Analytics _ga, _ga_* Up to 2 years

Lets us measure whether our advertising reaches the right people, and avoid showing ads to people who have already signed up. These share information about your visit with the provider concerned — that is what they are for, and it is why we ask first.

Provider Cookies How long
Meta _fbp Up to 3 months
Microsoft Advertising _uetsid, _uetvid Session to 13 months
Reddit _rdt_uuid Up to 90 days
TikTok _ttp Up to 13 months
X personalization_id Up to 2 years

We may not run all of these at once. Any that are not active set nothing.

How we honour your choice

Two mechanisms, not one:

The advertising and analytics tags are not mounted until consent is given. Declining means the scripts never load, so there is nothing to opt out of afterwards.

Where a provider supports a consent signal, we send it too. Google's consent mode and Microsoft's equivalent both receive your decision directly, so even their own machinery is told what you chose.

Changing your mind

Use the cookie settings link in our footer. You can also clear cookies in your browser, or block them entirely in your browser settings — though blocking the necessary ones will break parts of the site.

Browser controls are documented by each browser maker, and they apply to every site you visit, not just this one.

What our live chat widget stores on other websites

If you are reading this because you met our live chat widget on a shop that uses Re: Caffeinate, this section is for you — and for the shop owner who needs to describe it.

The widget stores a conversation token in the browser. Its only job is to recognise you if you come back, so your earlier messages are still there rather than starting from an empty box each time. The token does not track you across other websites, it is not used for advertising, and it is not shared with any advertising provider.

If the shop runs pop-up campaigns, the widget also remembers which ones you have closed, for one hour, so a closed pop-up does not reappear on every page.

When you send your first message in a browser session, the widget tells the shop's own analytics and advertising tags that a chat has started, if the shop has them on its page: Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Meta, TikTok, Pinterest and Microsoft Advertising. It sends the event's name only, never your messages or contact details, and keeps a flag for the rest of the session so the event is sent once. Which of those tags run is the shop's decision, so they belong in the shop's own cookie notice.

The shop you are talking to is the one that decides how that conversation is handled. We act on that shop's instructions under our Data Processing Agreement.
